Hickory Point Beach sand volleyball complex opens July 5

TAVARES – Volleyball enthusiasts and the general public are invited to the grand opening of the Florida Region of USA Volleyball’s Hickory Point Beach sand volleyball complex on July 5 at 27341 State Road 19, Tavares. The event will feature adult and junior tournaments, competitive and recreational teams, food trucks, music, family entertainment and more.

The event will kick-off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m., just before the first volleyball is served at what is being touted as “Florida’s newest beach volleyball destination.”

“Hickory Point Beach sand volleyball complex is a long time in the making and we are looking forward to opening day during the Fourth of July holiday weekend,” said Robert Chandler, Lake County Economic Development & Tourism director. “Lake County will now be a major player in what is quickly becoming one of the world’s most popular sports.”

The sports venue, which is located within the Hickory Point Recreational Facility, includes professional level net systems, lights and 24 inches of top-grade sand. The facility, which is operated by the Lake County Water Authority, also offers restrooms, free onsite parking, a children’s playground, outdoor showers, nature trail, swimming area, BBQ grills with picnic table, free boat ramp with dock access as well as additional amenities.

The construction of the new venue was made possible through a partnership between Lake County, Florida Region of USA Volleyball and the Lake County Water Authority. In April, The Lake County Board of County Commissioners approved $398,000 for the construction of the complex, which was paid for in full by the tourist development tax.

“We want to extend a personal invitation to everyone that has helped us make this happen along the way,” said Steve Bishop, executive director for the Florida Region. “We especially need to hear from our competitive volleyball enthusiasts across the state of Florida and also from any recreational volleyball players that would like to form a team and enjoy some friendly competition at our new complex as we celebrate the grand opening.”
