Learn the basics of operating a small business at upcoming SBDC seminars

TAVARES - The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UCF-Lake County is offering seminars to help entrepreneurs kick-start their start-ups.

The “Start Up Basics” seminar is designed to help fledgling business owners understand what it takes to start a business by discussing the importance of preparing a business plan and exploring business entities like sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation and Limited Liability Corporation. This class will be offered at two locations: 6 - 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16 at the Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) Leesburg Campus, 9909 U.S. Highway 441 and from 6 - 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23 at LSSC South Lake Campus, 1250 N. Hancock Road in Clermont.

“Bookkeeping and Tax Basics” will focus on basic record keeping and tax preparation for small businesses and discuss federal and state tax requirements, sales tax and more. The first class will be held from 6 - 9 p.m. on Jan. 23 at the LSSC Leesburg Campus; the second will be held from 6 - 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 at the LSSC South Lake Campus.

If you’ve wondered what type of insurance your business needs, try the “Insurance Basics” class and learn the most common types of insurance for start-ups. This class runs from 6 - 9 p.m. on Jan. 30 at the LSSC Leesburg Campus and again from 6 - 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6 at the LSSC South Lake Campus.

The Orlando Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) serves Lake County and was created in 1985 to help established businesses understand the process of selling to the government on the federal, state and local levels. PTAC is offering an informational session called “Introduction to Doing Business with the Government” to explain how their services can help businesses sell to the government. One-on-one consulting services will also be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The sessions will be held from 9- 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the LSSC Leesburg Campus and Feb. 6 at the LSSC South Lake Campus.
