Lake-Sumter Community College Offering Environmental Protection Agency Lead Safety Training on May 11

Release Date: May 09, 2011

LEESBURG -  Lake-Sumter Community College is offering a one-day EPA-approved training program covering lead safety for contractors in Lake County. The program, presented by Deland-based McNeal & White’s Institute of Envelope Science, is May 11, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., on LSCC’s Leesburg Campus.  Registration fee for the class is $75 per participant, and includes all course materials, examination and EPA Certification.  Lake County contractors can register by contacting Lucy Torman at the college’s Business Resource Center at (352) 365-3530 or via email at [email protected].

LSCC is providing this training as part of its partnership with Lake County under the county’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant project. The lead safety training is the second in a series of educational programs designed to facilitate energy efficiency retrofits and promote energy-related jobs for Lake County’s workforce.  Successful completers will attain certification under EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Paint Rule.  Licensed contractors and engineers successfully completing the training will earn seven CEUs, though you do not need to be a contractor to take the course.

In working with LSCC on the selection of lead safety as an educational topic under EECBG, Lori Barnes, sustainability planner for Lake County, cited the growing importance of energy retrofits for older homes and child-occupied facilities, many of which were built prior to the 1978 threshold set by EPA.

“With the county’s goals of reducing energy consumption and increasing the use of energy-saving measures, we expect that retrofit work will continue to be large focus,” reports Barnes. “The basic intent of this program is to ensure that Lake County’s workforce is prepared to meet the challenges of this type of work.”
