Joint meeting with Commissioners and School Board to focus on education and workforce

Release Date: April 28, 2011

EUSTIS — The Lake County Board of County Commissioners and School Board will be holding a joint meeting on Thursday, May 5, from 1 to 3 p.m. to discuss education and workforce resources and initiatives as part of the County’s Economic Action Plan. The meeting will take place at Lake Technical Center’s Eustis campus, located at 2001 Kurt St.

The public is invited to attend the meeting, which is slated as a continuation of the Economic Action Workshops held in February and March.

The meeting will include a presentation from Lake County Schools about Career & Technical Education programs in high schools and Lake Technical Center.  The two Boards will also look at goals related to education and workforce needs.

Following the meeting, the School Board will host a “Career & Technical Education After Hours,” which features a panel discussion focused on the importance of workforce development from local businesses. The event will also include live music, free hors d’oeuvres and demonstrations from some of Lake County Schools career academies and Lake Technical Center programs.

In March, the County unveiled its Economic Action Plan as a tool to help promote economic growth in the community. The Plan was developed with input from businesses and residents, and looked at ways to promote Lake County as a business-friendly community.

One of the goals as part of the Plan is to “Assure that we have an available and well-prepared workforce for existing, emerging and prospective businesses, and collaborate with Lake County educators to meet workforce needs and achieve educational excellence.”

The County is still in the process of actively seeking suggestions from the community for ways to grow business in Lake County. For details on how to submit suggestions, visit the Lake County website at www.lakecountyfl.gov/businessideas.
